One City, One Book
Beginning on September 1, 2010, the people of Laguna Beach will join together to read one book. On Thursday, October 21 at 7 pm, the author will join us at St. Mary's Episcopal Church to discuss what we've read.
Our featured author is Heidi Durrow, author of The Girl Who Fell From the Sky. Chosen by Barbara Kingsolver as the winner of the Bellwether Prize for best fiction manuscript addressing issues of social justice, The Girl Who Fell From the Sky has garnered rave reviews since its February 2010 publication.
The Washington Post calls it "an auspicious debut." The Miami Herald says: "Durrow's powerful novel is poised to take a place among classics of the American experience." The Boston Herald named it a Top 10 Buzz Book of 2010. The Girl Who Fell From the Sky recently hit the LA Times Bestseller List and is now in its fourth printing.
Barbara Kingsolver had this to say about the book: "A breathless telling of a tale we've never heard before. Haunting and lovely, pitch-perfect, this book could not be more timely." We couldn't agree more!
September Book Club
Our next book club is on Wednesday, September 15 at 6:30 pm. Please note that beginning in September, all future book clubs will be on Wednesday evenings. We hope you can join us for a lively discussion of Doghead by Morten Ramsland.
Music Together Event
Magic Steps Music presents an exciting Music Together event at Laguna Beach Books on Friday, September 17 at 10:30 am. Experience the wonder of Music Together and see how important and fun music-making can be. This musical event will be full of fun songs, rhythm chants, movement, and instrument play. It is also free!
Music Together is an internationally-recognized early childhood music program for children birth through five and the grownups who love them! First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.
Nigel Barker Event
On Saturday, September 18 at 5 pm we are so excited to be welcoming noted fashion photographer and judge on America's Next Top Model, Nigel Barker! Nigel will give a brief talk and answer questions, then will sign copies of his new book, Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation.
